Tentativa de la razón is an artist’s book by one of Naranja’s editors, Sebastián Barrante (Chile, 1986), produced in conjunction with the North American publisher Candor Arts (Chicago, USA), dedicated to author’s publications, artist’s books and bookbinding. Tentativa de la Razón is an edition of 14 unique works of writing on paper related to the story of the artist’s father during his stay in prison during the period of dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990). The story told is fragmented into 14 pieces that are interrupted or ‘erased’ with coffee residue scattered on the paper. Each work is contained in a three-window portfolio and a protective case. Each piece comes with a booklet containing a poetic inventory that contextualizes the individual work of each coffee grounds and its fragmented whole. This artist book was launched in February 2019 at the CODEX 2019 Biennial and Symposium, San Francisco, USA.

Sebastián Barrante (1986) / La Serena, Chile

Artist, editor and curator. In 2014 he co-founded Naranja Publicaciones, a space for the commercialization, production and circulation of artists’ books and experimental publishing.

His artistic work is linked to the experimentation of the book, illegible writing, and its link with the image.
