This publication by Thiago Honório is part of our personal collection and has been specially selected for the November newsletter. Here are some details about this publication.
  • Augusta is a project by the Brazilian artist Thiago Honório that emerges from the observation and mapping of a section of Avenida Augusta, in São Paulo, which he could see from the window of an apartment where he lived during the year 2003.
  • The book contains the names collected by the artist, taken from signs found along that stretch, dividing them into two chapters that correspond to the years in which the data were gathered: 2003 and 2017.
  • Each page contains a centered name and, at the bottom, the number corresponding to the location of the sign on Avenida Augusta.
  • The author notes that, although his initial intention was to explore the silencing of names, over time new readings emerged, such as gentrification, real-estate speculation, the Cidade Limpa law (which regulates visual pollution), among others.
  • The book is part of a series by the publisher IKREK called Ponto e Vírgula, which features artists’ books in a standardized format: a softcover book housed inside a hard case.
